Cannabinoids effective against Covid-19 variants, say scientists in groundbreaking study

Researchers tested the compounds against the alpha and beta versions of the virus in a laboratory and found that they were very effective.

The scientists didn’t study the effects of the compounds on people, nor did they compare the infection rates between those who used them and those who didn’t. Therefore, smoking cannabis to combat Covid was not part of the study.

THC is the cannabinoid that makes people high. CBD, which is the extracted cannabinoid, helps to ease anxiety. The compounds in this study are not the same.

Oregon State University researchers explained that CBDA and CBGA bound to proteins found in the virus and blocked the pathogen’s ability to infect people.

Richard van Breemen, OSU’s Global Hemp Innovation Center lead author, stated that “these cannabinoid acid are abundant in hemp”

They are not controlled substances, unlike THC, which is the psychoactive component in marijuana. Their safety profile is good in humans. Our research revealed that the hemp compounds are equally effective against SARS-Cov-2 variants.

The study was published in the Journal of Natural Products Monday. It tested various plant extracts, including red clover, wild yeast, hops, and licorice, to determine if there is a connection with the Covid spike protein.

Dr van Breemen said: “Our data shows CBDA and CBGA have been effective against the two variants that we looked at. We hope that trend will continue to other variants.”

These two chemicals were not only effective against Covid but also against subsequent strains of the virus Alpha and Beta. This may indicate that the results of this study could prove to be life-saving in the fight against mutated strains.
